I thought I’d slip in here one more time before the month of May ended to wrap everything up and tie together some loose ends. These past couple of weeks have flown by, what with everything going on, so I think it’s only appropriate that I slow down for a second here and highlight some thoughts/happenings of mine. I’ll cover both fitness and non-fitness related topics below; I apologize in advance if it seems a little ADD. I’m just going to start rambling here so bear with me.
- I tried barbell hip thrusting for the first time ever about a month ago, and it is now my #1 favorite exercise. I topped out at 95lbs, I believe, on my first session, and this past Sunday (session #6) I managed three sets at 200lbs. I’m pretty pleased with my progress and am curious as to whether I’ll reach my goal of hip thrusting 225lbs by session #10. Only time will tell. I’ll definitely get a video up if/when that happens. Apparently my glutes are much stronger than I’ve ever given them credit for. Kudos to Bret Contreras for the inspiration to try them out.
- I was informed a number of days ago by Keith Lai that I ended up in 4th place for the Top Social Media Fitness Blogger contest. Who, me? I think there was a mistake made there, but nonetheless, I’m absolutely flattered. Thank you to everyone who cast their vote for me. Check out this cool little badge!
- Over the past month or so, I’ve been collaborating with a classmate of mine to get a new website design up. We’re about done working out the details and I’m very excited about this new look. I’m happy with the simple, bare-bones feel of this current site now, but I figured upgrading to a more sophisticated, user-friendly version would be the thing to do at some point. I hope you guys like it when it finally rolls out.
- I had a phone interview with an individual in the fitness industry (yet to be revealed) the other day and during the 2+ hour talk, one of the things he asked me was what I wanted to be known for. Since January, I’ve been carefully sculpting my public image because I know how far a reputation can carry you (or hold you back). I came into this with an open mindset – I wasn’t sure exactly in which direction I wanted to go within the fitness industry but figured I’d follow whatever happened organically. I now have a better idea of what I want to do. I don’t want to be known for my fitness modeling (aka “looking pretty”) because I think that’s far too common and that space is, in my opinion, oversaturated at this point. Writing is one of my passions and also one of my greatest strengths, so I plan to capitalize on that. I have brains, so why not take advantage of that? I’m crafting my own unique voice in the fitness space here; I’m not trying to emulate anyone or be a second-rate version of some fitness celebrity. My aim is not to win over people’s loyalty through marketing or fancy shmancy images or trickery of any kind, and you can bet your ass that I won’t be in your face trying to get you to adopt my views. I sincerely hope that those of you regular visitors to my site are coming back because you like not only what I have to write about but also the way that I write. Content is king.
- On a related note, when I first began writing on here, my dad wisely advised me to let my writing guide me. I thought I’d be spending a lot of my time writing about things like “Top 10 Nutrition Myths” or “Why It’s Okay to Skip Breakfast” but truth be told, that stuff has been practically beaten to a pulp and there really wouldn’t be much that would make me different from the myriad of other fitness writers out there. While I do think there are some basic foundation fitness topics that merit attention, my true interest is starting to come out: behavioral psychology and all variations thereof. I’m fascinated by what goes on in our minds that affects our everyday behavior and the decisions that we make – not just the good but especially the bad (addiction, procrastination, binging, etc). And to be honest, I think the mental aspect of fitness is too often overlooked. If you have some fitness-related problem, there’s a good chance that the root of the issue is going to be inside your head. Fix your mindset and your life will become infinitely better. So expect to see more food-for-thought posts in the future 🙂
- Just because you look the part doesn’t mean you know what you’re doing. I see this time and time again among self-professed “fitness models” and “fitness gurus.” If you diet enough and do a ton of cardio, it’s pretty much a no-brainer that you will lean out (up to a certain point, of course). It’s commonplace to see people way overdoing it on the cardio. What really gets to me, though, is these so-called “professionals” who post silly workouts like 200 lunges or 5 sets of 20 smith machine squats and call it effective – or to put it another way, toss some random shit together and invite their loyal followers to try it out. Please. I can understand that it’s fun to be recognized in the fitness community and whatnot, but remember that with fame also comes great responsibility. You have a responsibility to present accurate, reliable, sound information. Don’t forget that.

- A lot of folks have been asking me what my plans are for post-graduation. What with the end of my college days quickly approaching (2.5 weeks!), I’m mentally preparing to leave school – pretty much the only thing I’ve known in my 20+ years on this earth – and enter the real world. Some of you know already that I’ll be interning at Cressey Performance this summer (an absolute dream come true). What happens after that is pretty wide open at this point. Where I live and what exactly I end up doing in the fall onwards will depend largely on my experience out in the Boston area. I have yet to live on the east coast (I’ve been a California chick for the better part of 6 years now) so this will be new to me. The one thing that I am 100% certain of, though, is that my passion is fitness and I plan to pursue that with all that I have in me. Look out, world 😉
- And finally, a note on continuing education. While my formal education within an academic institution will soon be over, I’m a firm believer that learning should never end there. To stay ahead of the curve in the fitness industry – indeed, in life! – requires keeping up with the latest research and being open yet skeptical to different ideas. I understand that what we know to be true today may be proven to be flat-out wrong in the future. I also understand that I’ve only tapped the tip of the iceberg in terms of all the knowledge on training, nutrition, and psychology there is out there. You can bet your bottom dollar that I’ll be continuing to learn from books, seminars, and other people. Never stop learning; never remain stagnant.
